The second day of the Baku Climate Action Week began on October 1. Speaking at the opening of the second day, Mukhtar Babayev, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, appointed President of COP29, said that this year alone there are many examples of the devastating effects of climate change on water and agriculture and the disasters it brings: "If we do not take measures, those destructive effects will become the norm all over the world. Climate change is estimated to cause some severe droughts to occur 100 times sooner. A 2 degree rise in global temperature is predicted to push another 200 million people into hunger. Tensions over water and agricultural systems will become more difficult. So we need to build sustainable food and water systems to adapt to a changing climate. This means more funding, research and implementation of new systems."
Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov said that water systems play a very important role in the fight against climate change, therefore irrigation systems are being modernized in Azerbaijan, more efficient water management systems are being created and investments are being made in new renewable energy resources.
On November 19, the Minister pointed out that food, water and agriculture will be the topics to be discussed in COP29.
"A harmony initiative has already been established to directly promote adaptation measures in the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan. That initiative will play the role of a kind of aggregator. Thus, it will use the power of existing initiatives, networks and coalitions together. Our goal is to exchange experience, identify areas of synergy, find gaps and, at the same time, gain access to climate-related financial resources, and at the same time, increase the role of women and youth in this process," said the minister.
The event continued with panel sessions and round tables.
It should be noted that the event, which will last until October 4, brings together 700 people from all over the world, including various sustainability experts and politicians, as well as leaders of the private sector and civil society, to explore adaptive climate solutions and accelerate the implementation of these solutions. As the world community prepares for COP29 in Baku this November, Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW) will go down in history as an important moment in the climate calendar.
The Baku Climate Action Week, held after the 79th session of the UN General Assembly and the New York Climate Week, will ensure a wider expansion of the work carried out within the framework of the road map leading to the 1.5°C target announced by the Trio of COP Presidencies and support the Action Agenda of the COP29 Presidency will be.
Baku Climate Action Week, held in partnership with London Climate Action Week, will further strengthen international cooperation and synergy in developing climate solutions.
