Within the framework of COP29, a special discussion on the topic of climate change and climate-resilient agriculture continues at the “Food, Agriculture and Water Day”. On the eighth day of the international climate conference, a panel discussion was held on the topic of “Agri-food legacies from COP to COP: key to achieving global climate goals”.
Global climate commitments were discussed at the event held in the “Blue Zone”.
The panel discussion held at the “Food, Agriculture and Water Day” was moderated by Kaveh Zahedi, Director of the Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment Office of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov highlighted the importance of further developing the achievements made at international climate conferences. The Minister said that the Baku Harmony Climate Initiative for Farmers aims to coordinate efforts to create sustainable agri-food systems around the world. “The Harmony Initiative is fully aligned with the goals set out in the COP28 UAE Declaration, and the Minister stressed that this initiative will play an important role in strengthening cooperation on combating climate change and building on the achievements made. By laying the foundation for permanent joint action, this initiative will provide significant support to the process of creating a legacy of stronger, climate-resilient food systems and shaping the future of agriculture.
The UK Environment Minister Mary Creagh, the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Amna Al Dahak, as well as officials speaking at the “Accelerating Action from COP to COP” panel session, noted that COP conferences are increasingly focusing on agri-food systems as a key sector for combating climate change and adapting to its impacts, and that it is important to fulfill global climate commitments.
It was stated that this event will serve to identify synergies, share lessons learned and promote accelerated action at national and regional levels to achieve global climate commitments under the UNFCCC. At the same time, the event is seen as an opportunity to develop stronger collaboration across sectors, streamline resources and promote a sustained focus on long-term goals.
The panel discussions continued in a question-and-answer format.
